Under the Bubble

Inside the bubble, people moved. Cities rose up towards the transparent ceiling. An entire world, blissfully unaware of its impending doom.

“All personnel, please clear the perimeter.”

Rebecca yanked herself out of her reverie. Taking one last look at the translucent bubble, she straightened up and made for the inner blast doors.

Rebecca strode into the control room and gave Director Sims a nod. He returned it and punched a large red button. A roar sounded and bright light flooded the testing room below.

A voice came over the intercom, “Seventy percent devastation, that’s a successful test, people.”

The control room broke out in applause as a roar shook the building. Quite suddenly, all was gone. Miles above, a control room full of people peered down through a translucent bubble to examine the test results.

A voice came over the intercom, “One hundred percent devastation, that’s a successful test, people.”

Janner’s Log

Sept. 15, 2031 – Large spores brought back from the team’s recent expedition in the Amazon. They appear to be parasitic and demonstrate possible signs of sentience.

Oct. 5, 2031 – Subjects have grown rapidly since arriving. They are able to consume whatever matter is introduced to them and have been confirmed to be sentient.

Oct. 19, 2031 – Had an incident. An assistant lost his hand while introducing the subjects to various metals. Subjects have been relocated to a more secure chamber.

Nov. 1, 2031 – Subjects are undeniably dangerous, however they could be the answer to global waste management issues. They have been proven to consume all plastics, metals, bio matter, etc., with minimal CO2 generation.

Nov. 10, 2031 – Subjects have proven more intelligent than we thought. We separated them, yet they devised a way to communicate and prepare an ambush for the research team. Multiple casualties. We’ve made a terrible mistake.

Foreign Powers

Mike shielded his eyes against the ship’s lights. A door opened and two figures were making their way down to him.

“Howdy,” said Mike, “We don’t usually get Kremulons around here. What can I do for you?”

“We come with a gift,” said the larger of the pair. It handed Mike a small box. “In this box is a button. If you press it, whatever candidate you want most in any major election will receive ten thousand votes. Take it, and restore balance to your world.”

With that, they returned to their ship and departed.

Back on their ship, the Kremulons fist bumped. “Another successful job, oh hang on we’re getting a call. Kremuluffin’s Ballot Stuffing, we put the good stuff in, Jeff speaking. Ah, Mr. Putin. Yes. Yes, we’ve just finished up in Texas. Mhm, on to Alabama. Very good, and Spasibo to you as well sir, alright goodbye.”
