We’re All From Here (2 min)

I say I am not from here, but here is where I was born.

I say I am not from here because at home, we speak Spanish.

I say I am not from here because I have dark hair, brown eyes, and an accent when I speak.

I say I am not from here because my abuelitos live in another country, and my favorite cousin, Gaby, does too.

I say I am not from here because I only get to see my family once a year, during summer vacations.

I feel like a foreigner because my name is Begoña, and that is hard to say in English. It’s even spelled with a letter that doesn’t exist in any other language! The eñe. I ask my parents why they named me that, and they tell me my name makes me unique and different.

But at school, we speak English, and all my friends have learned to say my name correctly: Begoña Prado.

One day at school, we all had to bring in a dish based on a family recipe. There were so many different smells in the room! Some foods were spicy, others were slushy. I learned about countries like Egypt, Turkey, Peru, and Argentina. My favorite dish was the ceviche. Most, I had never heard of before, but they were all delicious.

And some of my friends, like me, speak other languages. Nyra speaks Indian with her parents. Heng speaks Chinese with his brother when they play at recess. Paolo is teaching me some words in Italian.

My friends are all different: Lisa wears two blonde pigtails, and Ana has very long, black hair. Jack is shy and quiet, while his best friend, Rafael loves to ask questions in class. Nick has two moms, and Mike has five sisters!

Some of my friends wear unique clothes, and others celebrate special holidays, but there’s one thing we have in common: we love learning from each other.

So, while sometimes I might feel like I am not from here, I was lucky to be born here, because all the different cultures around me, make me feel at home.
