Clap Clap Miami – Tuhin

How to avoid typical tourist traps.

Now we all know what it’s like to be a tourist, and we all know what’s it like to have tourists in your city. Either way, the word tourist holds no respect anymore. Everyone wants to be a traveler that explores the place, and in the process explore themselves. Initially, everything seems perfect, the suns out, beautiful places and people. But after a point, either while you’re still here or when you’re back home, you feel a slight chip on your shoulder. “Did I really travel, or did I just end up in tourist traps.”

Miami has a lot to offer. The city is designed to woo tourists, it’s as simple as that. Almost everywhere you look, you are in the midst of something or someone trying to get your attention. But have no fear, here we’ll explain what to look out for if you want to experience Miami in its true colors, as a local.

So what makes a spot local?
First, it’s gotta have a good vibe. We like a place that’s both approachable and stylish with serious quality backing it up.

Second, the price needs to be right. It’s far too easy to drop $80 to $100 ahead. Whereas locals, we prefer spending half that, and have double the fun.

Where to eat?
Fast, casual and healthy is the name of the game in South Beach and I love the latest from Jugofresh’s Matthew Sherman. Paradigm Kitchen opened in October, dishing up fresh poke bowls, haloumi salads, and lamb kebab wraps. Followed with excellent service and a vibrant crowd that only uplifts your mood.

Where to drink?
Drinking is our second favorite pastime other than sunbathing at the beach. There are enough dive bars in Miami, where you can dive to depths of every cocktail and conversation you can keep up with (as locals, we sure do have a lot to say).

Mac’s Deuce Club is where you feel at home. Anthony Bourdain ranked it as his favorite spot and is also one of Miami’s oldest bars. It houses some of the oldest veterans in the Miami good-life scene. The drinks are super easy on the pocket, and the bartenders have great personalities that rub off on the sourest of folks. Though the Mac’s doesn’t serve food, you can bring your own food in from the numerous restaurants across the street.

Ask yourself, have you really seen it all?

As a local, it’s easy to come to the conclusion that you’ve probably seen everything Miami has to offer. But in all probability, by the time you finish reading this article, there will probably be 10 new events shaking up the city. So to cater to your FOMO (fear of missing out), we’ve made a short list of new places and events happening this week.

Moonlight Yoga at South Beach

520 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach, FL  33139

25th August

You’ve been a local long enough to know that full moon nights are packed with people kicking it on the beach. There’s something about the full moon that makes people more communal. But there’s no better feeling than spiritual healing under the moonlit skies.

The temperature and weather forecasts predict it to be a pleasant and slightly windy night. We recommend you carry a jacket along with your Yoga Essentials. Since it’s a weekend, a full moon night and on Collins Ave, expect some traffic. Would be better if you just took an uber.

After your yoga session, you could spend some time at Smokey’s juice bar, and get some of those endorphins in overdrive.

Purple Reign Prince Tribute

1 Seminole Way, Hollywood, FL 33314

25th August

We know, we know, there’s nothing better than purple rain. It’s been a long week and it’s time to get some of that energy out. The Purple reign band is said to put every audience member in a state of absolute euphoria.

Yes, it’s a bit of a drive to Hollywood, but we assure you it’s worth it. As a matter of fact, a couple of our writers would be there too (yes, we don’t just recommend events without trying them). Come on down, have a drink with and let’s talk about the prince of funk.

Free moonlit Isle of Dogs Screening

Horseshoe Park, Midtown Miami

26th August

This one’s for the dogs, and their lovely owners. If you’ve walked around enough, you know Miami loves its dogs. Often pet owners avoid pet flicks for they are known to be notorious tearjerkers. But this wonderful animated Wes Anderson film is a real treat. So this National Dogs day grab your pooch, get some hooch, and make your way down to the open air horseshoe park at 8 PM.

Jay-Z & Beyonce

7:30pm @ Hard Rock Stadium

27th August

Okay, this one’s big. If you haven’t already heard, yes, the king and queen are making their way to Miami. You may have 99 problems, but this one event will make them all go away. They need no introduction, no excuse would be good enough to miss this one.
