Bye, Now.

I softly tucked Laurie in. She watched me, her big, round eyes impossible to read. I gave her Unicorn Joe to hug and kissed her small forehead. “Sleep well, love.”

She kept her eyes on mine and said: “The man in the wardrobe says you have to leave now, mommy.”

Roommate

A loud thump coming from my living room woke me up. I leaped out of bed, heart racing. I lived alone. I peeped, but the room stood still in the dark, intact. I looked around for the source of the noise when a voice whispered on my neck: “Hey, Julia.”

Bystander

I drove at 25mph because it was too dark outside. My car was the only one on the tiny street, a shortcut I often took during the day, but tonight none of the street lamps were on. Eric sat next to me in silence, I couldn’t tell if he was tired or just tense.

“Power’s probably off,” I muttered.

“These houses around here look creepy in the dark,” Eric said quietly.

I thought I saw someone standing at the curb, a few meters away, so I switched to high beams.

A woman stood completely still on the sidewalk, staring at us. Her face was covered in blood.

I passed her in panic, unable to breathe or think.

“Oh, SHIT!” Eric finally shouted.

I reacted, hitting the break abruptly. The car halted.

“Did you see that?!” Eric said in a high-pitch.

We looked back, but the woman was gone, swallowed by the darkness.

What Happened While I Was Gone?

I got home feeling tired, wondering what mom would be making for dinner. I walked in through the backyard, as usual, and straight into the kitchen, but it was empty. I checked the clock – 6:25p She would normally be there already.

“Mom?” I heard my voice’s echo, but no reply.

I looked around the house, checking each room, but there was no one home. I went to the garage but both cars were there.

That was weird.

“Hello?” I yelled again.

This time I heard a thump coming from above. I jogged up the stairs and into the master bedroom. It was empty, but now I could hear more thumping noises coming from the closet. I approached slowly, heart suddenly racing:

“Mom?”

The noises stopped. My stomach churned, and I swallowed hard before pushing the door open.

My brother lay lifeless on the floor, his stomach torn open, and mom and dad sat eating his guts.
